Chilogatee Branch

Chilogatee Branch is a tributary to the Chilhowee Reservoir and in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park adjacent to the Foothills Parkway. The upper half of the project was relatively stable with localized areas of bank instability, with sparse or absent riparian woody vegetation along the left side of the stream. The treatment for this section was Enhancement I. In areas exhibiting bank instability, banks were laid back to provide for proper hydraulic geometry, and native woody vegetation reestablished on the stream-left riparian area. The lower half of the project was entrenched with unstable eroding banks, inadequate floodplain access and weak bed features lacking appropriate riffle/pool se-quences. On-line restoration was done for a small section in the middle of the project, where areas with preexisting bank vegetation and pattern were deemed acceptable, the channel bed was raised to make use of existing materials and conditions to the maximum extent possible. On the unstable areas, work included reconstructing channel dimen-sion, pattern and profile, as well as installation of in-stream structures to provide aquatic habitat. This was similar to the work performed on the lower half of the project, except restoration was on new alignment which means a new channel was created with the same objectives as on-line restoration.
